I had the wonderful opportunity to work with Chatbooks on a special book cover for Mother’s Day 2019. It was the top performing book cover in that category and it outperformed all of our expectations.
This was inspired by one of Lauren Hom’s #HOMwork challenges. The idea was to letter a gross word in a beautiful style. I was really playing with textures, colors and florals on this piece.
I created this piece as a present and it was a huge success. i first laid out the letters digitally, then we cut on several test pieces to find just the right placement, laser strength and cut depth. I love how it turned out.
I had been thinking about this phrase for a while as I kept hearing different variations of what our future is and I kept feeling that in the end we all have our part. It’s not one gender, one race, one political party, one sexual orientation, one outlook on life or one opinion that will make it. It’s all of us! And the sooner we learn to live with this diversity the sooner we will make progress to a truly inclusive and harmonious world. With equal opportunity for all of us!
When Sonia from @just.drawing.words and I started talking about doing a collaboration piece this phrase kept popping in my head. I felt it was so perfect as a multi person effort because it really enforces the meaning! I love how it turned out and I loved working with Sonia on this!
I started with a quick sketch to introduce the idea, Sonia then refined it with a better layout and we came to a finished piece. I did the lettering on top and Sonia did the illustrations of the people with the letters on their shirts.
I created this piece for an art show centered around food. We all lettered our favorite food. While this doesn’t really sound like a food it is in my mind. This is the name of a restaurant close to where I live and it is the best food in the world. So I decided to letter their name instead of lettering a specific food.
I created this as a fun vacation piece. I just wanted something that represented our vacation in Hawaii. This felt appropriate. All the flowers and plants are native to the islands and the “hi” can be read as a word or the state’s abbreviation.
This was a campaign I launched in August 2018. I had been thinking about this topic for a while. The topic of “allies” had been following me around. Then one night I was just hanging out on Instagram and seeing all the talent out there and I started feeling really down about myself. Feeling jealous of other people’s talent and success.
That’s when it hit me. I thought: “Hey. Why don’t I focus all that attention on positive feelings instead of indulging in my negativity?” I thought if I could focus on being an ally to others then I wouldn’t have time to bring myself or others down. I wouldn’t have time to make enemies and in the end would be part of the greatest alliance!
So that lead to this idea:”Let’s make it a challenge” I wanted to encourage others to do the same and spread a wildfire of positivity and encouragement.
This is the challenge:
1. Letter the phrase: “Let’s be allies”
2. Post it on Instagram using #letsbeallies and tell us about a time when someone was an ally to you. A time someone really had your back.
3. Challenge 3 people to do the same and see how far we can take this.
Also, tag me in your post so I can see all your beautiful creations!
My hope with this whole thing was that we can spread light and motivate each other to look out for one another to build an alliance of love and encouragement.
This project came out of my desire to only own pretty things. I had this snowboard that I bought second hand for 60 bucks. But it was so ugly and made me feel like a teenager. So I decided that I would give it a makeover.
The words sum up all the things I love about snowboarding:
Smell the air
feel the Powder
fall again and
get back up
own the mountain
and enjoy the ride
This was inspired by the podcast “Perspective Podcast” hosted by Scotty Russell (@prspctv_cllctv). One of the biggest keys to success is to just keep creating. You’ll never make progress if you stop creating things. To move forward you need to just keep creating.
I work with a group of teenage girls. We noticed that they struggled feeling loved, appreciated, beautiful and all the things teenage girls struggle with. In an effort to help them overcome the negative feelings I created this project.
I created a linocut and stamped each notebook. With that each notebook is unique and has it’s own flaws that make it beautiful. I really wanted the girls to understand that visual “flaws” can what makes something beautiful and desirable. In the notebooks I wanted them to write down things they like about themselves so whenever they were in doubt they could come back to the notebook and read through all of the things they loved about themselves at one point.
Wild about letters is a challenge Ritchie Type started. It’s all about sharing the artists story. I created this piece to share my story on how and why I started lettering.
I started by going to Salt Lake Lettering Club about two years ago and everybody was so encouraging that I started believing that maybe I could learn this craft. In August 2017 I had the chance to go to Letter West and that really pushed me to improve. Then of course learning from the great Gemma O’Brien and Lauren Hom and Becca Clason at the retreat was another extra push. I have been obsessed with it and try to squeeze as much lettering in my days as I possibly can. The more I do it the deeper my love for it gets. .
I simply wanted to illustrate my travel bucket list for this piece so I could hang it up and visualize it. I believe that when you write things down and see them every day, they are more likely to become reality because you are constantly reminded of what you are working towards.
This was part of a Goodtype Tuesday challenge. The month of September is about Suicide Prevention Awareness. In partnership with TWLOHA’s great campaign called “Tomorrow Needs You”, goodtype challenged letterers to letter this phrase and post it online. I really wanted to be a part of this because I believe that if we can all lift around us we can be a more unified and happy community.
I love the outdoors and I love to travel. In May 2018 my husband and I hiked the Grand Canyon from the North Rim to the South Rim. It is a 24 mile hike and it took us 17 hours to complete. It was an amazing experience and I created this piece to always remind myself that I can do hard things and that I want to keep exploring until the day I die because that is just who I am.
I created a video of our experience. If you are interested in seeing that click here.
This piece was inspired by Ian Barnard’s philosophy. Everybody can become a hand-letterer but it takes a lot of patience and a lot of practice. So I created this to remind myself that I can’t expect to be the greatest artist in the world without putting in the practice and having patience to allow myself to get there.
